Where To Go For A Northumberland City Break

A staycation is a brilliant way to take a break from work and go on holiday, because it can be a lot easier, you don’t have to travel so far and it can also work out a lot cheaper than going overseas.

Recent research from ABTA has found that city breaks are now actually a lot more popular these days than beach holidays, so why don’t you think about booking a Northumberland bed and breakfast so you can enjoy a city break in the north-east this year instead of hopping on a plane and jetting off to parts unknown?

Durham is a wonderful city to consider spending a few days in, just south of Newcastle upon Tyne. You’ll be able to see the stunning River Wear, which wends its way around the beautiful cathedral, as well as climb up the stairs in order to get some of the best views of the city and surrounding countryside. Wear comfortable shoes as there are quite a lot of stairs to climb!

Or you could choose to go to Newcastle itself instead, which is also a great choice for a city break this year. Must-sees here include the Swing Bridge, the Great North Museum and Grainger Town, the latter of which boasts some incredible architecture that dates back to the 1830s.

And then there’s Gateshead, which is home to Saltwell Park and Saltwell Towers (one of the best examples of a Victorian park to be found in Britain), the Millennium Bridge which is the first and only tilting bridge in the world, and FlowRider, a surfing machine that lets you try out surfing and body boarding… perfect for the kids!
